Semiconductor

Ultra high performance plastics from Gharda can be used in the semiconductor industry where dimensional stability, wear resistance, chemical resistance, and high temperature processing are required. High strength and stiffness plus long-life performance makes them an effective alternative to metal components in wafer handling, processing vessels, parts carriers, and IC test equipment sockets and handlers.

The semiconductor industry’s demand for smaller, tight tolerance IC packages that operate at higher frequencies is making it increasingly difficult for traditional materials previously used for test socket applications. New, high performance test socket components made from G-PAEKTM - PEK polymer are available which provides a competitive advantage in key microprocessor test socket applications due to its significantly lower moisture absorption and tight tolerance machining.

G-PAEKTM polymer is increasingly used for the transport and storage of semiconductors during production. Historically, the material of choice has been carbon fibre reinforced polypropylene. However, with increasing specification of semiconductor wafers, it has become clear that polypropylene carriers have met their limitation. Production is adversely affected by wear particles, out gassing, doping of semiconductors by the ionic extractable and poor mechanical properties of the carrier material.

Wire and Cable

The wire and cable coating industry is dependent on the process ability of polymeric materials and does not generally use high performance thermoplastics. However, due to the ease of processing and the high quality of product, Polyether Ketone (PEK) polymer is increasingly used in demanding wire and cable applications.

The medium-viscosity grade G-PAEKTM 1200G is recommended in melt extrusion-based wire and cable insulation layers, as well as PEK Monofilaments, multi-filament fibres, ultra-thin tubing, and films.
